Curriculum Overview

Language Arts Literacy
Reader's Workshop:
  • read alouds, mini-lessons, guided reading (small group instruction), close reading, shared reading, and independent reading time/conferencing 
  • focus on reading strategies such as making connections to text, asking questions about text, making inferences and predictions, visualizing, determining importance, and monitoring comprehension
  • focus on reading skills such as determining central idea and theme, summarizing, comparing and contrasting, describing text structure, among others 
Writer's Workshop
  • mini-lessons, shared writing, independent writing, spelling and grammar
  • high focus on qualities of good writing: purpose and meaning, structure/organization, craft/style, and conventions 
  • different genres of writing include: narrative, realistic fiction, informational, opinions, and literary essays 
  • place value, multiplication, division, geometry, numeration, fractions, decimals, and word problems  
  • Energy, Waves, Living Organisms, Earth's Systems, Engineering  
Social Studies
  • All About New Jersey!!
